Dakota Rock & Roll Music Written
on 4.27.09 Many say "those were the good, old days". Things seemed simpler, and the memories of the music will be forever etched in our minds. There were lots of ballrooms / dance halls / establishments thoughout South Dakota that many of us might have frequented. Remember the Dells Pavilion; Japanese Gardens; Spearfish Pavilion; the Paragon; Tacoma Park; Ruskin Park; Milltown; Prairie Moon; Teen Town; the Roller Drome; and Horts? There were spots in the towns of Lake Andes; Sisseton; New Effington; Britton; Pukwana; Vivian; Lake Madison; Centerville; Canton; Beresford to name a few. Sioux Falls had it's places also. Some of them were the Arkota; Coliseum; Club Cabana; Shortys; Seven Oaks; Pomp Room; Stardust; and the Mocomba. Maybe you went across the border into Minnesota to the Hollyhock Ballroom or into Iowa to the Roof Garden or Shore Acres. So many places, so many great memories. The SD groups were many during this time. Some of them from outside of Sioux Falls were Marlys Roe and the Talismen; the Mystics; Gemini 6; JB & the Kats; the Cavaliers; Gene Carroll & the Shades; Gordon Bird & the Stingrays; Shattoes / Chateaux; Byrnes Brothers; Don Robar & the Monarchs; the Dukes; the Apostles; Gary Miller & the Vaqueros; the Couriers; the Tempos; and Sherwin Linton & the Rockateers. There were many groups that called Sioux Falls their home including Myron Lee & the Caddies; Dale Gregory & the Shouters; the X-Men; the Hursemen; the Trippers; the Bleach Boys; Those of Us; the Arctics; Handy Brothers Chessmen Show; Sad Lad and the Mourners; and the Jadesmen. Out of state bands that might have come into SD or you might have traveled across state lines to see included the Pilgrims; Continental Co-ets; the D.C. Drifters; the Gestures; the Notorius Noblemen; Steve Ellis & the Starfires; the Fendermen; the Velaires; Dee Jay & the Runaways; the Seven Sons; the Coachmen; Wes Reynolds and the Fabulous Houserockers; and the Unbelievable Uglies to name a few. Don't forget those KOMA advertised bands - the Blue Things; the Rising Suns; the Roarin' Red Dogs; Spider & the Crabs; the Fabulous Flippers; and Wes Reynolds & His Blood Thirsty Executioners. Besides many local and area radio stations ( KELO; KISD; KIHO; KIMM; KDSJ; KKLS to name a few) that played rock & roll music, there were three stations that many teens tuned into from approximately 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. Those three being KOMA in Oklahoma City; WLS in Chicago; and KAAY in Little Rock, AK.
