One of South Dakota's most successful horn bands got their start in Flandreau in the late 60's. The original group consisted of eight members, including one female. Over the years a number of different musicians were part of the band. They performed in a four state area doing both original material and cover songs. They had a unique style that included a variety of antics and showmanship.

Nickel Bag of Soul traveled in a Greyhound Bus to their gigs. The band was in high demand and always drew a large crowd. They usually changed outfits between set and could be seen in jumpsuits, velvet tuxedos, leather boots, or some other attire. The group performed into the 70's and reunited for a show in 1986 at the Flandreau High School.
