Dell Rapids Pavilion

In 1917 the first Dell Rapids Pavilion was constructed in the beautiful city park and for the next thirty years served the community and surrounding area well. It was the center for many social activities, including dances, roller skating, celebrations, and many other events. But in 1947 it burned to the ground and left a huge void. Townspeople quickly replaced the building with a new and better pavilion that was even more popular

Up through the mid fifties most people enjoyed the orchestra and big band era but the music started to change and by the late fifties rock and roll was the music of choice. Entertainers like Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, and Myron Lee were packing the pavilion with people, mostly teenagers. On most weekends the crowds were much larger than the fire marshall would allow and people came from many miles away. But later in the sixties places like the pavilion lost their popularity and started to close. In the seventies the pavilion became a factory and a fire destroyed it in 1979.
