Larry Bell and the Continentals As a sophomore at Spearfish high School, Larry Bell got his first taste of musical success when he and a couple of buddies won the Snow Queen Talent contest. The year was 1959 and Larry Bell and the Star Guitars were born. joining Larry was cousin Don Ainsworth and Doug Erickson. In 1961 Don left for the service and was replaced by Jim Anschutz and Jack Robinson. They went by several names, including the Larry Bell Quartet, Larry Bell and the Three Demensions, and the Majestics. They played throughout Eastern Wyoming, Northwest Nebraska, and Western South Dakota. After graduating from high school Larry went to Lake Tahoe to work but returned a year later and reformed his band, now known as Larry Bell and the Continentals. With the help of Rapid City DJ Johnnie Rowe, they worked in Denver, Co for 54 straight weeks, becoming one of the top bands in that city. They recorded two records at the well known "Norman Petty Studios" in Clovis, NM. He also recorded for Gary Paxton (of Alley-Oop fame) in Nashville. Larry Bell produced some terrific music and just missed being a national star. |
