Feature of the
Month This is the sixth edition of the Feature of the Month for the South Dakota Rock & Roll Music Association. We are rock and roll fans, and looking to write a feature each month, that will not only bring back wonderful memories, but will also remind us all of the history that was made in our great state of South Dakota. We are hoping to write a feature each month selecting one of the many talented Bands, DJ's, Radio Stations, and Dance Halls throughout SD. “Forward: These recordings and photos are presented as a historical snapshot of the youth music scene in the Sioux Falls area in the mid-Sixties. The quality of the recordings and performances vary widely. But for anyone who may have spent a 60’s Friday or Saturday night in one of the area’s great ballrooms or cruised with the Beach Boys or Beatles cranked up in glorious AM mono, you may find a piece of yourself here.” “THE ROCK N ROLL PROJECT” is a compact disc released in 1993 featuring recordings made by Sioux Falls bands in the mid and late 1960s. Ken Mills compiled the tracks on the CD from studio master tapes in his personal collection. Partners in the project were Pat O’Brien, Mark Griffin, Greg Blomberg, Mike Conner, Gary Johnson and Mills. Proceeds from the CD went to the Children’s Inn. The “THE ROCK N ROLL PROJECT” CD contains songs by Dale Gregory and the Shouters, the Dynamic Hursmen [correct spelling], the X-Men, Those of Us and The Trippers – all popular local bands in Sioux Falls at the time. Some of the songs were originally released on 45 rpm records including “Did Ya Need to Know” by Dale Gregory and the Shouters, “Without You” by Those of Us, “Have You Ever” by the Trippers, and, “Please Believe Me” by the X-Men. Other tracks on the CD were recorded with the hope of future release or for use as promotion. Almost all of the songs on the CD were recorded at Dove Recording Studio in Minneapolis or at I-G-L Recording Studio in Milford, Iowa. “My Flash on You” by Dale Gregory and the Shouters was recorded at KELO radio. In addition to the compilation CD, the “THE ROCK N ROLL PROJECT” also includes a booklet telling about the bands and the era. The booklet was created by Greg Blomberg and designed by graphic artists Steve Brummond, Steve Hoffman and Mark Pollard of Media One Advertising and Marketing in Sioux Falls. One thousand copies of “THE ROCK N ROLL PROJECT” were published. Over 700 copies were sold at Lewis stores. About 250 copies were distributed to band members and friends. |
